You've had a good run, but we can't afford the status quo.
You've voted against saving American jobs. As we lost jobs here in New Jersey, your company added jobs overseas. The facts.
New Jersey has lost ground since you went to Washington in 1982.
You've been in Washington since the early 1980s, but our situation has gotten worse. In fact, New Jersey now ranks dead last in the amount of money it gets back from the federal government. We need a Senator who will fight for our fair share. The facts.
You haven't been straight with us on Iraq.
Both before and after the Bush administration sent U.S. troops into Iraq, you said you unequivocally favored the military invasion. You even said you were “on the President's train” regarding the War.
The facts.
You didn't always think age was irrelevant.
Twenty-five years ago, a 58-year old Frank Lautenberg ran for the Senate against a 72-year old woman named Millicent Fenwick. He made age a big issue in that campaign -- and in 2001, he revealed why:
In campaigns there are few barriers...the last thing I wanted to do was assault her, but I thought it was important to remind voters of age because to develop a standing [in the Senate], starting out in your seventies it would be harder to garner seniority and ranking positions. [Source: Her Way by Millicent Fenwick, p. 208] The facts.
And still, you refuse to talk about your record with the voters.
You continue to refuse to talk to voters about the issues at public debates. What are you trying to hide?
The facts.
You've had plenty of time to turn things around. But we need a new voice, fighting for us.
